The city of Shenzhen is situated in the north of Hong Kong and it is considered as China’s Cupertino, as it is the centre of China’s hi-tech industry. Here, for instance, there are Huawei’s headquarters, the world’s third most productive company of smartphones after Apple and Samsung.
But Shenzhen is not only the hi-tech city of the country, it is also its most sustainable one, as confirmed by global consultancy McKinsey & Company in 2016. Shenzhen’s administration has been aggressive and determined in improving the environmental conditions of the city, for example by cutting roadside air pollution and planting trees along the streets. Thanks to this clever management, in a decade the city was able to reduce air pollution levels by 50%.
What’s more, this is the first city in the world to have developed an all-electric public bus system, indeed all its 16,000 buses are all-electric. They are more than the combined number of electric buses operating in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, New Jersey and Chicago.
These buses are also quieter and cheaper to operate and maintain.
And also, when it comes to the taxis this city demonstrates to be sustainable, currently 63 % of them are electric and by 2020 the city plans to electrify all of them.
In a country like China, where pollution is nowadays one of the greatest problems, Shenzhen seems to be the perfect example for other cities, not only in China but all over the world. This clean and green model not only help the environment, but also the economy and the society, since now the public transportation is more efficient and cheaper.
